3. Lantern

Description

Lanterns are assets which the player must light up, in order to form sources of light to shine onto the land art. Lanterns will only appear in the later stages of the game as the light fades, as the sun will no longer be able to light the land art pieces, the lanterns will be the new source of light, to ensure the light rays still come out from the land art and the memories can be viewed. One or more lanterns may appear within a puzzle and the player would need to work out which lantern position is best for completing the reflection puzzle. So the asset is intended to add to the puzzle element.

Delicacy – I found the skeletal nature of the fruit to be beautiful, due the to fine detail within the veins of the leaf, creating a delicacy to the piece. Inspiring me to want to ensure the lantern contains a delicate form, to create a visually stunning design.

Simplicity – I’m greatly inspired by the simplicity of the piece, particularly how the light flare is positioned so perfectly underneath the leaves. Which I feel makes the light look nature, as though it has grown, which I wish to capture within the lantern design.

Tear drop form – I am inspired by the tear drop form due to its organic and elegant nature, which I think would look effective within the atmospheric woodland game world, as it has a clear connection with Richard Shilling’s artwork.

Wrapping technique – I am inspired by the way the nest has been created out of wrapping thin sticks together, forming an enclosed feeling though with a structure that is ultimately open, creating a elegant and delicate feel to the piece.

SPECIFICATION

  • Unobscured light – One side of the lantern needs to be unobscured, to make sure light can come out of the lantern and fulfil its purpose. However, the light needs to be contained, as some of the puzzles will involve selecting the lantern in the correct position. Therefore, light cant come out from all directions from the lantern as this would loose the puzzle of choosing the right lantern position.
  • Link with game world visuals – To ensure the lantern appears believable within the landscape, by producing a design based around nature and land art, to form an elegant organic asset.
  • Intractable by character – As the lanterns needs to be lit, it is fundamental that the lanterns are easily accessible for the player to reach into them and light them up.
